Are you a Dusty Diver or a Rusty Diver?
Some divers question the value of attending a scuba refresh
program. We
recommend inactive divers perform the following calculation: Divide the total
number of logged dives by the total number of months of diving inactivity. If the number
is a fraction, a Scuba Refresh is recommended. (Example: a diver has not dived
for two years since his original certification dives. Four total dives divided by 24
months creates a fraction of 1/6.) We consider this inactive diver a "Dusty
Diver".
The Dusty Diver Scuba Refresh program is designed to refresh diver
proficiency and comfort with as little as a practical pool
session. The pool dive will emphasize
equipment assembly and fundamental diving skills. The Dusty Diver program is open to any
certified diver who has been inactive for 6 months or more.
Anyone who has been out of
diving for a period of 5 years or more should consider a "Rusty Diver"
program. Skills, techniques and equipment have changed since you've been
diving. This program is taught personally, one instructor to one student (in
some cases, a couple) and requires a classroom session, a pool dive, and two
open water dives. In most cases, a Rusty Diver program can be scheduled as
needed. Equipment requirements and rentals are the same as for the Scuba Refresh
described below. The Rusty Diver program is designed to re-teach and review
appropriate fundamental knowledge and skills without requiring a diver to
re-take the entire Learn to Dive program.
There are certain circumstances in which previously certified
divers with minimal experience and very long periods of inactivity may be encouraged
to re-certify.
To participate in a Scuba Refresh (Dusty Diver or Rusty Diver)
program, divers should call or stop by to register. Tuition is $90 (Dusty Diver) or $180 (Rusty Diver). Participants in
either program
provide their own mask, snorkel, fins, weights and weight belt. Regulators,
tanks, wet suits, weights, and buoyancy compensators may be rented for a modest fee.
If we are providing sized items such as wet suits or BCDs, it is imperative that
you stop by the store earlier than the date of the Scuba Refresh program so that
we can properly size your equipment.
Participants in the Dusty Diver programs should review basic diving theory.
Be sure to bring your log book and your C-card to the pool as well in
order to receive appropriate skills review validation.
